The success of TV shows has the combination of a formula “comfort, convention and invention”. A hit tv show takes an established genre - star driven, concept driven, ensemble comedy, detective etc. A tv show using old concept with a new spin is acceptable and it will not alienate the audience. The successful “MASH” has its roots in “F-Troop”. Similarly “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is not much different from a number of reality programming. The time scheduling of tv show is most important. A hit tv show brings the viewers to the show before and after. Ensemble acting and multiple story lines hooks to hold viewers interest and build upon.

It is always difficult to find new ways to appreciate an already popular tv show. It is easier to appreciate unpopular tv shows. A good actor immortalizes a role and makes the character as unforgettable icon. Some of the all time favorite top tv characters are: The role of Larry Hagman as JR Ewing on Dallas; Henry Winkler role as Fonzy in Happy days, who made Fonzy as an household name; Don Knotts’ portrayal of Deputy Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith show, the funniest character in tv shows; Eddie Haskell portrayed by Ken Osmond on Leave it to Beaver; Steve Urkel played by Jallel White of Family Matters fame; William Sanderson of the Newhart show; Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle; Lucille Ball playing Lucy Ricardo, the role doesn’t need any explanation; Bill Cosby as Heathcliff Huxtabel on The Cosby Show.

The two ways of looking the success of a TV show are firstly the commercial success of the show that is watched by more viewers and well paid by the advertisers and secondly the elevation of literature. The quality and cultural values inculcated by the show. Some tv shows are withdrawn after a few episodes due to poor quality of the show and poor audience response. Shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, and The CSIs are always popular shows. Vignette storytelling concept is also very successful as the entire short arc can be told in one or two scenes. TV shows like Law & Order took stories from current headlines and developed issues as stories and makes the viewers feel interesting and relevant today.

There are hundreds of tv shows airing around the world. Survival is the ultimate goal of all tv shows. Some of the tv shows are purely local while some tv shows even though global they are really global-slash-local. Reality shows are cheap to make and lot producers make reality shows due to economic reason. The hit tv shows such as Alias, a story about a job in SD-6, a secret division of CIA, ‘Friends’ involving Monica Geller, Rachel Green, Chandler Bing, Joey Tribbiani, Phoebe Buffay as friends and their humorous every day life; American Idol, The Simpsons, ‘CSI’ success is beyond ratings. It also won the Golden Globe for best TV entertainment. The Simple Life 2 is a hit tv show cast by Hilton, Nicole Richie.
