Smiling is essential in human contact. A Hollywood smile is the first thing man and women notice about each other. Unfortunately nature didn’t bless us all with pearly whites, but nowadays that can be changed with the help of cosmetic dentistry.

People don’t understand cosmetic dentistry very well. Cosmetic dentistry is different from general dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry focuses on modifying the appearance of a patient’s oral cavity and surrounding structures. Through cosmetic dentistry the appearance of the mouth can be altered to the patient’s concept of what is visually pleasing.

The most commonly described cosmetic dental procedure is teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is a procedure that lightens teeth and helps remove stains from their surface. The majority of dentists perform teeth whitening. There are many advantages of teeth whitening , including : a special event that you have to attend , a younger appearance but as well as improving your self-esteem.

Almost anyone whose permanent teeth have come in can benefit from teeth whitening. Unfortunately teeth whitening is not recommended in certain circumstances, such as: pregnant women , children under 16 or people with peroxide allergy and gum disease. Teeth whitening is not permanent; it depends on what food you eat, or what you drink (coffee, cola and wine are well known for causing stains on the enamel surface).

One of the most frequently asked questions about teeth whitening is: Do teeth whiteners damage tooth enamel? Studies have shown that teeth whitening products using 10% caramide peroxide showed little to no effect on the mineral content of a tooth’s enamel surface.

Another cosmetic dentistry procedure is the use of tooth veneers. Veneers are ultra thin custom made laminates that are fixed directly to the teeth. This cosmetic dentistry procedure is an option for closing gaps or disguising discolored teeth, but do not respond well to whitening procedure.

One of the newest cosmetic dentistry procedures is laser teeth whitening, also called laser bleaching. In this teeth whitening technique a translucent bleaching gel is applied to the teeth and a laser light is used to activate the crystal in the gel. This way the gel penetrates the enamel and brightens the teeth.

Most cosmetic procedures are not covered by dental insurance, unless they are done to repair a cavity. The cost of some cosmetic procedures can easily go as high as 1000 $ per tooth.

In conclusion, if you feel insecure about your smile, go to your dentist and discuss the possibility of using cosmetic dentistry to make you shine.
